Sta. Monica Church

One of the oldest churches in the country, the Sta. Monica Church is made of coral stone and fashioned in Baroque style. The church is a National Historical landmark. It also houses the biggest Catholic church bell in Asia. It was made of 70 sacks of gold and silver coins. The bell measures five feet tall and seven feet wide and weighs 10,400 kilograms.

Moro Tower

Historical Attractions- Built in 1814 in order to repel the invading Moors and Portuguese colonizers.

Robinsons Place Roxas is strategically located in Pueblo de Panay, a 300-hectare mixed-use, master planned township development at Roxas City in Capiz. 

A two-level full service mall, Robinsons Place Roxas will house over 160 outlets for shopping, dining, service and amusement. It will also include a parking lot with over 800 car slots and 200 motorcycle slots. 

Ayagao Beach

Ayagao Beach located in Barangay Talon.  It is a mere 20 minute leisurely ride from the city proper over well-paved roads (until the last 200 meters which is rough road already).  The beach also faces the Sibuyan Sea, like Baybay beach and offers a spectacular view of the sunset.  Unfortunately, it also shares the same seasonal problem of pesky jelly fish. 

Olotayan Island

Olotayan Island is an island of legend. The name is a combination of olo (“head”) and  “tyan” (stomach), as a Capiz legend tells of a cruel giant whose body the anitos (gods) struck with lightning, scattering his body parts all over the sea. Nearer to Roxas’ shore is Mantalinga Island – reportedly the giant’s “mata” (eyes) and “talinga” (ears).

AGTALIN SHRINE

Get amazed by a gigantic statue of the Virgin Mary at the Agtalin Shrine. Located in the municipality of Pilar, the religious icon is considered the tallest in the country at 80 feet tall. The International Marian Research Institute listed the Agtalin Shrine as a premier pilgrimage site. It is believed that some faithful with incurable diseases were healed by praying at the shrine.Amazingly, it nestled on top of the hill, confirming human sentiments.

 Found realizing started through the efforts of the Agtalin development Foundation and numerous private citizens. In 1991, construction began with the help of an engineer, a sculpture, volunteer laborers, the difficult terrain, heavy equipment and human labor just kept on working.It was in 21 July 1993 when finally, the beautiful 85-feet statue was blessed by Bishop Onesimo Geordoncillo of Capiz, and then Parish Priest of Dulangan, Rev. Fr. Domingo Deocampo.The Statue considered the highest Marian Statue in Asia, has found a beautiful place in the province of Capiz.

The Kasadyahan sa Capiz is the Sinadya sa Halaran Festival is the joint festival of the City of Roxas and the Province of Capiz. It is a mixed festival in that it is celebrated for both cultural and religious reasons.

Kasadyahan sa Capiz is to celebrate the Festival every 4th to 8th of December in honor of the feast of the Immaculate Conception , who is also patron of the city of Roxas . Making the celebration by large and colorful parade on the road and the main rivers of the province . There is also a parade to show the products from the sea , which is the main source of livelihood of the inhabitants of Roxas and Capiz.

Deliberate on the altar is one of the most important festival in Roxas . It is the union of two different assemblies, " meant " for city and " Altar " for the province .

Celebrating the Kasadyahan sa Capiz at Roxas City

One of the Kasadyahan sa Capiz is The Aswang Festival is a controversial event in Roxas City in Capiz held every October. This is done to change the negative connotation attached to the name of the province claimed infested aswang. 

Capiz became known to haunt the rumors of this alleged ghost . Rarely immigrate tourists to this province because of fear . Consequently , wanted change Roxas City in Capiz bad sight refusing absurd to say about the province ; and to accomplish this end , the Aswang Festival started in 2004 at the initiative of Blood Capiznon , Inc.Every 29th and 30th of October held the festival . Those participating in the parade wore frightening costumes related to the ghost as kapre , wak - wak , tikbalang and so forth .

The Diwal Harvest Seafood Festival is held every 2nd weekend of July. The Diwal is a rare bivalve found abundantly along the coastal waters of Roxas City and Capiz. Ten years ago it disappeared from the waters of the City and Province because of illegal harvesting practices and pollution. Now, ten years later, after intensive research, seeding, and strict fishing and harvesting legislation, the Diwal is again ready for harvest as the efforts of the City have once again caused its abundance. The festival was first celebrated this year and will be celebrated annually. The Diwal is known for its sweet and juicy qualities and its immaculately while elliptical shells, hence the name "Angel Wing" Shell. Every year during the festival, tons of the bivalve are harvested and sold in the open market and the seafood festival, with drinks and music, and lots of partying in thanksgiving to the Almighty for the great and rare bounty that is Diwal.

Where to Eat

No other place in the Philippines is dubbed “The Seafood Capital of the Philippines” but the progressive Roxas City. The flourishing marine agriculture of Capiz‘s economic epicenter even turned the thriving seafood industry into an annual celebration due to its abundance. During my visit, there were neither parades, marching bands, nor banderitas, but there was certainly a gastronomic festival from my mouth down to my tummy.

La Playa de Roxas, or commonly known as People’s Park, serves as a hub for recreation and leisure with a picturesque view of the grey sanded shores of Baybay Beach and the vast Sibuyan Sea as the backdrop. Locals and tourist alike flock in the coastal baranggay to hangout, exercise, swim, and above all, to indulge on the savory seafood delicacies of Roxas City.
